Gnocchi with spicy tomato sauce recipe

Gnocchi, guh-nochi? I wonder if I pronounce it right. I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t, you see, I have this incredible ability to read simple words incorrectly. Anyhow, I’ve always wanted to try gnocchi. I read that it’s typically eaten with a sauce and so I thought that I’d spice up a tomato sauce (literally) by making a spicy one. Naturally, this sauce has lentils in it ’cause I love lentils with tomatoes!

Serves: 4-6
Preparation time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 35 minutes
Total time: 55 minutes

For the spicy tomato sauce

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 portobello mushroom, diced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1/2 yellow bell pepper, diced
  • 2 small chilli peppers, sliced
  • 400g tin chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 125g lentils, rinsed
  • 250ml water
  • salt and pepper
  • basil, to garnish (optional)

For the gnocchi

  • 500g potatoes, quartered
  • 100g oats
  • salt and pepper

For the spicy tomato sauce

  1. Heat a large, oiled saucepan over medium heat. Sauté the onion for 5 minutes until translucent.
  2. Then sauté the mushroom, pepper, and chilli peppers for 5 minutes.
  3. Add the tin of chopped tomatoes, tomato purée, lentils, water and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to the boil and then simmer for 25 minutes until the lentils are cooked.

For the gnocchi

  1. Fill a pan 3/4 full with boiling water. Add the potatoes and simmer for 20 minutes, until soft, then drain and transfer to a bowl.
  2. Meanwhile, blitz the oats in a food processor until flour forms.
  3. Mash the potatoes with a fork and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Mash in the oat flour to form a dough.
  5. Transfer the dough onto a work surface and roll out into a long sausage shape, about an inch in diameter.
  6. Cut the dough at regular intervals to make mini sausage shapes. (I made mine about an inch and a half long.)
  7. Fill a pan 3/4 full with boiling water. Place the gnocchi in the water and simmer for 2-3 minutes until they float, then drain.
  8. Serve with the spicy tomato sauce and garnish with a few basil leaves.
